Root canal treatment (also known as endodontics) is a procedure, designed to eliminate bacteria from an infected root. These infections are normally caused by a dead (or dying) nerve inside your tooth, which may be connected to an abscess (a collection of pus). Failure to remove the dead tooth, or the dead nerve, will allow the infection to spread to other parts of your mouth. Root canal treatment is generally performed by creating a hole to your dead nerve, through the middle of the tooth. The nerve and infection would be removed, and since the resultant tooth structure is more fragile than a regular tooth, it would be filled with a rubbery material to replace the nerve. After that, we can assess if there is a need for a Crown, to prevent tooth breakage.
